Long before The Food Network entered my consciousness, food and cooking on TV belonged to a few local programs, and to that home of Julia Child, PBS.

Today, PBS has maintained its varied and high-quality food and cooking programming with the likes of Lidia's Family Table and America's Test Kitchen, among others. My newest favourite is Diary of a Foodie brought to us by the folks at Gourmet magazine.

Like its parent publication, the focus is food, but the range goes far beyond meals to cover equipment, the cultural anthropology of cooking and food, travel, and lifestyle. It's modern and stylish, and really interesting. Yes, I'm a fan!

They're running older episodes here, and last Saturday's was called The Hungry Luddite - a quirky exploration of how technology has altered the world of food, but also how traditionalists are preserving the art and craft of Japanese knife making, heirloom fruits and vegetables, and ancient cooking techniques.

Of course there are supporting recipes too, to be found at their website:

Janet, I have a question and did not find an answer in the ''help'' area. Can you help?

When you get a notice from this web site that you have a message how do you find it......I got this message ( thread "My Dishes", which was updated Nov 21, 2007 9:33:12 AM by DJ.
To view the thread, visit:
http://kitchentable-campbells.forums.liveworld.com/thread.jspa?forumID=400020383&threadID=400001532 )

and when I click on it to see...it just takes me to ''My Dishes'' and it shows I have 17 comments but all the ones I've looked at ''under each picture'' are ones I've already read...also over at the list of blog's it has an astric that I have unred messages, but wehen I click on that astric nothing happens either.

I'm at a loss, the only place I know to find comments is under the photo in comments or in messages!!! Most of the time I have a message from the web site and I click on it then it goes to the blog where you can read it right their.

Janet,

While I was a Food Network junkie for quite a while, and still do watch some programming there, PBS has long been my favorite place to see quality cooking programs.

Diary of a Foodie is a great program. I really enjoy the rich and varied foodstuffs featured, and I love the emphasis on using regional/local products. One recent program, "Noble Rot" was fascinating - I was very interested to see the use of huitlacoche! "Delicious Indigenous" was enjoyable as well, the buffalo recipe they presented is one I mean to try. Buffalo is absolutely delicious!

In addition to those you mention, Rick Bayless' Mexico, One Plate at a Time is a favorite here. Bayless' sojourns to Mexico are always interesting - a visual and mouth-watering treat! I also enjoy Cucina Toscana, Damian Mandola is a joy to watch, given his enthusiasm in the kitchen.

Thanks for bringing up this subject, I always enjoy reading about what others are watching!
