This past weekend I was in Boston for a wedding. The night before, I met some old friends for a cookout and was thrilled when dessert was carried to the table: old-fashioned strawberry shortcake with spoonfuls of sweet berries and soft mounds of real whipped cream. It was heaven on earth! A few nights later, I was at my sister’s house and she made a similar dessert, but mixed the whipped cream with mascarpone cheese. Another celestial experience! It made me think about making a fruit tart for a dinner party I am planning for next week. It’s so easy to make a tart shell with frozen puff pasty and then spread the baked shell with pastry cream. This time I think I will use a variation on the whipped cream and mascarpone cheese mixture my sister made instead, and top it with sliced strawberries and peaches as well as raspberries and blueberries. Sounds good, doesn’t it? I will let you know how it turns out. Do you have any good ideas for easy summer desserts? Please share them!

Charlotte,

I am so glad you brought up this wonderful way to eat the summer's best strawberries. This was one of my mother's favorite desserts and while I thought it was pretty lame when I was a kid, I grew to love it as much as she did. She liked full-fat sour cream but I think your idea of non-fat is great. The strawberries and sugar provide the sweetness and the sour cream adds counterpoints in terms of flavor and texture. Thanks for sharing this.
Mary,

Try this as a quick summer dessert: Wash a pint of fresh strawberries, leaving leaves on (and stems too). Drain well and arrange in the middle of a platter. On one end, place a bowl of sour cream. On the other, place a bowl of sifted brown sugar. To eat, pick up one strawberry by its leaves. Dip into the sour cream and then into the brown sugar. Eat and enjoy! And NO double dipping. Remember to also serve with a bowl for discarding the left over leaves. I use non-fat sour cream for a very healthy and easy summertime dessert!
