I get so much pleasure out of watching vegetable plants grow and picking fresh produce that have no chemicals on them. My dilemma is I don't have room in my yard for a garden. I have a very sunny area right outside my kitchen door that I plant grape tomato plants. I will plant one cucumber plant under them. One year I put a cantaloupe plant and it did really well. Does anyone else squeeze in a few plants between their shrubs or other compact areas of your yard? I would love suggestions on how to make the most out of a very small area. :)

DJ, I only had room for 2 grape tomato plants. I eat them as snacks. They disappear about as quick as they ripen. When I do get too many, I will take some to the office. Everyone there loves them. I haven't canned in years. I guess I am getting lazy in my old age. :)
Ahhh, you're so blessed Viv, what with more abundance coming in! Storing up for winter? Will you have enough to can? pickle? Salsa???? :)
I have cut into my first cantaloupe and it was mighty fine. The cucumbers and tomatoes continue to come in. I wish I had a place for a more plants but I am happy with the few I have.
That is a great idea David. I have threatened to plant more in my little space. I cut my shrubs way back so I would have more room. HA!
I remember dad attaching fence wire from the eaves of the house down to the edge of the flower beds. He planted pole beans between the shrubs and let them climb up to but not on the roof. They produced so well he tripled the fencing the next year.
Breaking News ~~ I planted a cantaloupe plant again this year. I can't wait to see if it grows. :)
Dawn, do you know what variety of tomato she plants in her pots? I guess I was pushing my luck when I planted grape tomatoes plants in a pot. They grew 1/2 the size of the same plant that went into the ground.

Gloria, I would love to plant green peppers in a pot. Do you know about what size pot you used? What is your favorite cooking herb? I might give one a shot and drag it into my sunroom over the winter. My flower pots survived this year in there. You all are getting me excited about Spring. :) Thanks!
Hi Viv. I'm back from Florida and the idea of gardening is reality after seeing green. ha. I am a gardener. I can everything and the garden is my therapy. I grow green peppers & Tomatoes on my deck and by the front door in the flower box I have chives. I also have other herbs on my deck as well. So handy to step out and snip them. I bring them in in the winter in the kitchen window and they do beautifully. In summer I carry them back out.
Viv:

My mother has always had good luck with growing tomatoes in pots. She does this every year and has plenty of tomatoes that she can enjoy throughout the season.

Dawn:)
Hi Janet! Having herbs in your planter has to be so much fun. I tried planting grape tomatoes in huge pots but their growth was stunted. Let me know if you do this and how it works for you.
The spot I found is a planter box outside the front door. Although it's mostly flowers, in combnations that change every year, depending on what appeals to me at the garden centre, I sneak in a few herbs too. The planter's deep enough to have the flowering plants in the front, and some basil, chives and so on at the back. This year I might put in a couple of grape or cherry tomato plants too, or get another planter to put at the back door too.

The snow will be gone eventually! :-D
