The Progressive Insurance Girl

Oct 13, 2008 6:45 PM
I just found out that I went to summer camp with the girl who plays "Flo", the Progressive Insurance girl! Isn't that insane? My sister and I went to camp with her in New York when we were 13 and 15 years old, respectively. The girl's name is Stephanie Courtney and she was 15 at the time and in my sister's group. I totally remember her, too! She was nice to us. How wild is that? I didn't even recognize her with all the makeup on, but there's a video on YouTube of her doing standup and she looks like her old self. Heh!!

Olympics

Aug 16, 2008 9:45 AM
I have been enjoying watching the Olympics. I really liked the synchronized diving (was that in there before? I don't remember it!) and the gymnastics. I've been a gymnastics fan since the Seoul Olympics in 1988 when I was 15. I think 3 or 4 of the girls on the team that year were also 15 -- Phoebe Mills, Chelle Stack, Brandy Johnson were all 15. I remember Melissa Marlowe was 17 and Hope Spivey was 17 and then there was Kelly Garrison Steves who was 21 I think. I can't remember how old Rhonda Faen was. Anyway, it was really fun to watch because I was at that age and I was watching my peers. In the men's competition there was Valery Liukin -- he is now the father of the newest All Around Olympic Champ, Nastia Liukin. It is amazing how time flies and that 20 years have passed! And I learned that one girl named Oksana Chusovitina is still performing and this is her FIFTH Olympics. She's 33!!!! She says she has to keep competing to make money because her son (he's about 9 now) has leukemia. It's so sad:( What a Mom, though. I give her mega props for her intense devotion to her child. She now competes for Germany but was born in the former USSR and competed for them and Uzbekistan. I have never actually heard of an Elite gymnast being older than 21 or 22. Usually they're about 15 or so at the Olympics.

That Phelps guy is amazing, isn't he? Swimming is fun to watch as well.

Moving to a new apartment

Jul 3, 2008 8:08 PM
We're moving next week so I am living amidst packing boxes. I haven't been cooking for the past week, just subsisting on fast food (blech after a while). I am longing for some english muffin pizzas and have all the fixin's for when I can cook again. It's been so very hot and today hubby and I moved my mom's furniture to her new place. We managed to get it all done ourselves and yesterday we had a guy at our complex, David, help out. He sort of disappeared on us after he left to go have dinner, though. He has two little kids so I assume his wife wanted him to stay home.

I'm trying to catch up on things like reading -- I am currently on chapter 5 of Atonement and I am starting Frankenstein. I've never read either one and Atonement is just so well done it's scary. I bet Frankenstein will turn out to be creepy but for different reasons, LOL!

There have been so many major changes in the past couple of months. I hope things will be looking up.

Adventures with Turnips

Nov 20, 2007 10:17 PM
This year I am on the hunt for turnips, a veggie I have never actually seen in "the flesh" but have tried as a frozen food. WHat I remember was they were yellow, squishy and extremely bitter, and I wondered why my mom kept making these things every Thanksgiving since I really truly hated the stuff.

Since we have all been in Texas, we haven't been able to find frozen, easy to make turnips, so I finally said to myself, I must get some turnips for mom since she hasn't had them in years now! And of course, I must restore balance to the universe by including these nasty little things once again in our Thanksgiving tradition.

I went out to HEB who had nothin'. Then I tried Whole Foods Market which DID have some but they seemed kind of weird. I hadn't seen one before but these just looked kind of funky. I bought a few anyway and they're sitting on the counter, eyeballing me.

Finally, as I was looking for some salad at Super Wal-Mart, I found a lovely bag of fresh turnips. Now these didn't look weird or funky, so I bought them. They are uniform in size and I feel pretty ok about this whole project now.

I asked for some help on the boards but me being me, I forgot to bookmark the question so I must go searching for it. Carol sent me a great msg with some instructions on just what to do with these mysterious veggies, so I have a small chance of success now!

Once the deed is done (the turnips are cooked and ready to serve) I will take a (hopefully triumphant) photo of them. And hopefully Mom will have a happy look on her face when presented with them, too!

Meatball Hero

Sep 29, 2007 4:55 PM
I'm going to attempt a turkey meatball hero tonight, with just some regular tomato sauce with meat in it, and a nice gorgeous fat French loaf of bread and some mozzarella on top. If I remember to get a photo I'll post it.

I am still looking for the photo I took of my honey mustard Dijon chicken I made a couple of years ago. I was so proud of that meal:)

Advil is my new best friend

Sep 3, 2007 5:02 PM
Thank you for your prayers and well wishes! I have finally had the first part of the root canal done. Yesterday hubby and I went looking for a dentist who could do it and we found one. He opened and drained the infection and took the nerve out and though it wasn't pleasant, at least I am on the road to recovery. He put medicine in the tooth and said it has to stay there for at least 2 weeks. He has me taking Advil and yesterday when the numbing/freezing wore off I was practically laid out crying in pain until I took one of those little wonders.

I ended up taking two so it was 800mgs and was happy the rest of the evening. I got up at 4am with pain and took a 400mg and went back to sleep. So now I'm getting some pain back but I'm trying to wait 2 more hours before I hit the Advil again as I don't want to take too much of it in 24 hours. It is wonderful stuff, though! Tylenol is NOTHING next to Advil. I just bought a huge bottle of Advil.

I have to go back to have the rest of the root canal done but the doc is waiting until I'm in no pain at all to proceed.

All prayers are REALLLLY appreciated!

Hubby has tonsilitis and so far the antibiotic they put him on hasn't really helped. So we're going to call the doc and see if they can change it tomorrow.

I can't really eat much, as I have to be very careful with my temp filling, but I'm so thankful to have the infection drained and be on the road to feeling better. I really hope I respond well to the meds the doc used.

Agony!

Aug 28, 2007 10:24 PM
I have an abscess in my molar and need a root canal. I've been in pain for about 3 days straight now and yesterday I had a cavity filled because I thought the pain was coming from one of the upper teeth. Turns out it was the lower tooth and I had it diagnosed today. The dentist froze that one tooth and all the pain disappeared for a little while, then it wore off so it came back:( Now I have antibiotics and painkillers til I get in to get the root canal on next Wednesday. I wish I didn't have to wait so long, I'd much rather just get it done. The dentist says I will start to feel better and have less pain in about2 days, once the antibiotic kicks in and reduces the infection. The pressure is causing my upper teeth and whole lower jaw to ache intensely and every now and then I get a ZING! of pain.

Hubby is also ill and has a fever. We've been so stressed lately and I just want things to get better fast.

Brownies

Aug 27, 2007 4:09 PM
I gave up on the diet and made a lovely pan of very cakey brownies. I only put walnuts on a quarter of the pan since DH doesn't like nuts.

Too bad I had to go to the dentist today and get my tooth worked on. Now I'm in pain and can't eat my brownies, either!:(

A Husband to Cook For

Aug 13, 2007 4:46 PM
I just got married and now have a new mouth to feed, lol:) Trouble is, he's very particular. He likes most of his veggies raw except for corn, doesn't like broccoli or Brussels sprouts etc. He likes his burgers "dry", isn't into foods mixed with other foods like say casseroles. He's a simple, yet complicated eater. I'm finding it challenging. Today I made some pork chops and breaded a few for me and left a few "naked" for him. That's how he likes it. He also likes meat cold as he doesn't enjoy the taste of re-heated meats. I am so going to need some help feeding this man! LOL:)

Ignorance

Jun 26, 2007 4:17 PM
I've realized how often I come up with these stupid questions in the forums, like "What color are blueberries before they turn blue?" I honestly am pretty ignorant about things like this, having grown up in New York City where I didn't have a garden and my family subsisted on the old standards like hamburgers and hot dogs and chicken cutlets. We didn't do any kind of really interesting or experimental cooking and we didn't use many fresh vegetables aside from iceberg lettuce. So I am woefully ignorant of a lot of things to do with food and cooking.

I guess a lot of people are like this, where you just kind of get a lot of packaged stuff or shake and bake sort of things so you're not in a position to have to get scientific like Alton Brown about your meals. But if you're going to be a good cook, I think knowing more is essential. I won't ever be a chef, but I'd like to learn more so that I don't have to ask so many rudimentary questions. The people on the boards haven't chastised me yet, so I'm hoping I'm coming off as just a food innocent:)

I love the recipes shared here because everyone has their own take on them, changing them and tweaking and substituting and I get to hear how they went over before attempting them myself. I've saved so many recipes in a folder from these forums, and I'm just really happy to be in a place with such warm and patient people who know their food and have so much to teach me.

The fiance

Jun 8, 2007 5:02 PM
In other than food news, I broke up with my fiance about a month and a half ago. It just wasn't working out at all, and he was getting very verbally abusive.

Right now I am back in a relationship with a guy I've known for a couple of years but we never really pursued anything because we kind of have different philosophies. We decided that we should make a go of it and just see how it works out. He wasn't a factor in my breaking up with the fiance, though. Things with the fiance had not been going well -- partly I think due to the stress of the whole visa process. He had been hanging up the phone on me and ignoring me and called me some not so nice names -- and you just can't go into a marriage with a guy like that. It was like red flag city.

So I'm pretty content now and hanging out with my "new" man. We both love gaming and movies (he is in film school, actually) and since he's so easy going he really balances my high-strung-edness.

:)

Now I get to try all my recipes on him! Whee!

Those little chocolate frosted donuts

Feb 9, 2007 9:27 PM
My fiance and I love those little chocolate frosted donuts from Target. He's from England and he's back there now (*sadness*) but when he was here, we would enjoy munching on those little suckers while watching Jeopardy!. It became a little evening ritual after dinner. Relax on couch. Eat donuts. Watch Jeopardy!. I sure do miss him:( Now those donuts remind me of him and good times.
