Soon after reading this thread, I had a dream where I bought a huge, and I mean huge box of this stuff! LOL I remember telling my husband to go find the washing soda, too. It was pretty funny, me carrying this box of Borax as big as a house, lol. This site gets too seared in my brain! -- Worries go down better with soup. ~Jewish Proverb

Cin, wow great "recipe"! Can you use this in a regular washer? I don't want to end up with super bubble overflow like on that episode of The Brady Bunch I remember when my sister put regular dishwashing soap in her dishwasher, hee hee. The result was quite interesting! What IS borax, anyway? I better go look it up. -- Worries go down better with soup. ~Jewish Proverb

Cin, my grandparents had a "thunder" mug in the upstairs bedroom in their old house. Not because they didn't have indoor plumbing (there was one bathroom) but because they turned the fire off at night and the house got too cold to go into any but a room that had breathing bodies keeping it warm. Angela, I saw a recipe similar to this one that recommended using Ivory soap instead of other soap so it could be used for those with sensitive skin or allergies. -- Lisa

Scott.. I never thought of Oxiclean as an expensive Borax... thought never crossed my mind.. Now my curiosity is getting the best of me... I am going to have to buy a box next time I'm at the store. I use Oxiclean for tough stains all the time..but it is not inexpensive. I love the idea of using it in the dishwasher too. I buy Kirkland for that also... I am impressed with Costco's own brand..but I am willing to try something less expensive.. it's all about cutting corners nowadays!

Hi Cin, know exactly what your talking about. In England, in apt's. where they share a bathroom, potty's are kept under the bed, for usage in the night. Penny. -- chopsticks are the reason the Japanese did not invent custard

I love the laundry soap idea, but wonder if it could be used for kiddos with sensitive skin? My 5 year old has eczema and we always use a free & clear soap. -- ~*~Angela~*~

Mom, Borax is the original oxiclean. I have used it for the last 35 years. I have tried oxiclean and there was no difference between them except price. I also use it with some Mr. Clean, water and borax as a cleaner (409 substitute). I have also use it and washing soda (equal parts) with a squirt of dish soap in the dishwasher (if you have hard water increase the soda to 2 parts to 1 part borax). It worked as well as anything I have bought. If you are afraid of consumption use the small side of the grater.

I was born in 61.. but in NYC... we had a "regular" washing machine.. but no drier.. I lived on the 14th floor at the time.. My mom had this wooden drying rack that was over the bathtub that she would lower to hand the clothes on... Laundry day was Thursday.... because she would clean the house for Friday night Sabbath. As for pampers.. I know they started selling them at least in the Bronx in 1971. My niece was born that year..and I learned how to diaper her using pampers and this big diaper pins that scared me. I was 9 1/2 at the time. Like MommyMo Borax was used to keep roaches away. We never had any but I think it was due to the borax all over the place. When you live in an apartment in the city I guess you come to expect it. The first time I saw a roach was at one of the Disney resorts. My oldest was breast fed for a little while.. my daughter not at all..and my youngest for about 4 months... only allergies with my kids is drug reactions. I am curious to know how the borax detergent works.. as long as I can keep my husband from munching on the cheese looking shredded soap. I would be willing to try this.. I buy my detergent at Costco..Kirkland free and clear HE.. and it is about 13 dollars.. the container last about a month.

Thanks, Cin for educating me on a "thunder mug"! Mommy Mo, I wasn't breastfed either, but didn't have allergies. My mom gave me Similac and it's what I gave my son too. -- Jennifer "Every Saint Has A Past, Every Sinner Has A Future"

Jennifer I'm only a year younger than you and my mom also had to use a diaper service with cloth diapers. She tells me I was allergic to anything else. I was also allergic to all sorts of formulas (alas, I was not breastfed.) and had to have Nutramagin (the really expensive stuff from Enfamil for allergic babies). My grandmother used to use Borax to kill roaches! -- Worries go down better with soup. ~Jewish Proverb

> Cin, what is a "thunder mug"? > > > --Jennifer laughing my head off.....you are WAY too young to know what that is. When you don't have a bathroom inside your home you have a little room with a ''thunder mug; slop jar; potty w\a lid'' in that room.....so when it's raining and\or storming or snowing.....you don't have to go out in the storm to run to the ''out-house'' to do your business and therefore you can keep from getting soaked, cold or hit by lightining in the night. Next morning you (someone) had to go empty it and wash it out to get it ready for the next night. -- >> ~~>*>Cin(\0/)<*<~~ << >> ><(((*>Jesus<*)))>< <<

Cin, what is a "thunder mug"? My mom has always used a washing machine and bought laundry soap, I think. When I was born (1971) , there were only cloth diapers and not disposable , so my mom hired a laundry service to wash the diapers for her and drop them back off clean every week. I couldn't imagine her making her own laundry soap ...lol! -- Jennifer "Every Saint Has A Past, Every Sinner Has A Future"
