I love sweet and sour sauce and I did not know that duck sauce and sweet and sour were different. I actually thought those were two different names for the same thing. Both of these recipes sound fantastic. -- Lisa

Mom Duck sauce is based with fruit (apricots, peaches or plums - plum sauce) where sweet and sour is not. It is just a mater of cost. Here is a plum sauce I make. Plum Sauce 1 12-ounce jar plum preserves 2 tablespoons vinegar 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon minced onion 1 teaspoon minced ginger 1 clove garlic, minced Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, then simmer a few minutes to blend flavors. Let cool, then chill. Tastes best if refrigerated, covered, overnight to allow seasonings to mellow. Will keep refrigerated for several days. -- Edited by 2598976 at 04/20/2009 6:13 PM PDT

Is sweet and sour sauce the same as "duck sauce?" My mom says no, but I'm not sure. When we get Chinese food out, it's always hard to get them to give us extra "duck" sauce. I even offer to pay extra, but they skimp. I sure do need to make some of my own, that way there will be no arguing. -- Worries go down better with soup. ~Jewish Proverb

I know what you mean, Janet. Sigh. I'm going to have to get these things to keep on hand because I certainly can't buy a decent tasting sauce. I've tried all brands and none of them come even close to tasting like the stuff in the restaurants. Thanks for sharing the recipe with us, Jennifer. Shannon

Jennifer, I envy your pantry! It seems like every time I want to make something new I have to go out and shop for almost all the ingredients. Those little cans of pineapple juice would be a very useful addition to the pantry, and I might make Sweet and Sour Sauce more often too, thanks! Any other pantry staples you can suggest to expand the repertoire of menu possibilities? • Janet

Sweet and Sour Sauce for Dipping (egg rolls, won tons, etc.)

I needed some sweet and sour sauce for my egg rolls and this was so good! I always keep those little 6 ounce cans of pineapple juice on hand so I can make this whenever I want it. 3 teaspoons cornstarch 1/3 cup rice wine vinegar 2 teaspoons sesame oil 2/3 cup unsweetened pineapple juice 2 tablespoons ketchup 4 tablespoons brown sugar salt to taste, a pinch In a small saucepan over medium -low heat, whisk (using a metal whisk) together the cornstarch and vinegar. Add oil, pineapple juice , ketchup, brown sugar, and salt- whisking constantly until the mixture is thickened and heated through. -- Jennifer "Every Saint Has A Past, Every Sinner Has A Future" -- Edited by 2864590 at 04/16/2009 6:47 PM PDT
