Hi Melissa (a big music fan?)! I'd never heard of Thunder Cake, but I found a few recipes online - I like the idea that you start the cake when you hear thunder and try to get it into the oven before it rains. Apart from most of the recipes calling for 1/3 cup pureed tomatoes, I didn't see a similarity though. The Thunder Cake recipes seem to make up as a layer cake, and include cocoa but none of the spices that make Tomato Soup Cake a spice cake. And then there's the chocolate butter icing that's called for. So the short answer is that I don't think they're similar, but now that you've introduced me to Thunder Cake, I think I'll have to give it a try too, thanks! • Janet

I loved this one and am definitely gona make it again..and again. .....when I get some raisins I'll make it right by the recipe but here's what I did this time. Made Janet's Tomato Soup Cake..w/a few variations. I used the Healthy Choice Tomato Soup (as that's what was in the pantry). I didn't have any raisins so used.....cherries, cranberries and pineapple tid-bits. Instead of flouring the pan after greasing it, I used my homemade vanilla/sugar to dust the bottom and sides of the pan, then sprinkled cinnamon/sugar over that....then poured in the cake batter in, ( I make my own vanilla/sugar stored in a glass bottle with a tight lid). I made a heavy drizzle of powdered sugar, lemon juice and vanilla. Then sprinkled cinnamon/sugar over the top. It turned out wonderful, sooooo moist. Thank you Janet for introducing an old dog a new trick...or is that ''treat'' . -- Cin(\0/) -- Edited by 2932550 at 02/13/2008 9:10 PM

I still havent gotten around to trying this! I keep forgetting all about it when I go to the store. Im going to REprint it right now and go put it in my purse. I have to run to Walmart later this evening to get hubby some more paint supplies, so hopefully that will remind me to pick up the stuff to make this. -- ~*~Angela~*~

Jennifer, you're right, the cinnamon and cloves give it that spice cake taste, and there's no tomato soup taste. I think the soup adds moistness, and probably that bit of acid that activates the baking soda. Smells wonderful when it's baking too! • Janet

I plan on it too...so does this taste like a spice cake( which I love)? I am assuming you can't taste the tomato, right? -- Jennifer When baking, follow directions. When cooking, go by your own taste.- Laiko Bahrs

I plan to try it real soon..it looks scrumptious. I love cakes that are moist and good that you don't have to frost, as they are too sweet for me...me being a diabeic that is. -- Cin(\0/)

DJ, I'm sorry I missed your birthday, I'd have baked you a virtual cake! I hope it was another very happy 39th! David, when I dug out the recipe card, it actually said "bake until done." Um, gee, that's informative. I tried to keep track when I was baking it this week, and of course managed to lose track of the baking time. I think it was something like 40 minutes, but I guess I'll just have to make another one to be sure! Jennifer and Cin, it's not too scary, honest. Give it a try! • Janet The picture (a little fuzzy - I'm looking at getting a new camera!) is here: http://kitchentable-campbells.forums.liveworld.com/photo-album/2549249/Tomato-Soup-Cake/400002067 -- Edited by 2549249 at 02/10/2008 10:55 AM
