Go, Pens! I LOVE your "Campbell's Cup" idea! I'm already planning my Back-to-School contest around the theme of "We're #1" and have been collecting Steelers and Penguins prizes...our school (esp our principal) is crazy about the hockey/Pens so I might just have to try the Stanley Cup idea too!

I agree, parents, students, and teachers alike are motivated by contests. Here are my (rough) collection numbers for the three years I've been in charge...1st year - 19,000 points...2nd year - 38,000 points...3rd year - 63,000 points!! I believe the fun contests and monthly communication with families have been the keys to increasing our participation. (Campbell's Fall Bonus programs in 2008 were great, too!!)

Love the Golden Can and other trophy ideas. I plan to make a Campbell's Cup like the Stanley Cup. I've gotten several low Campbell's thermos/bowls and a kid thermos cheap on ebay and a red melamine bowl from Target, and plan to stack and superglue them somehow (will post a pic eventually if it works out). The idea is to start a monthly contest and each month give the trophy to the winning classroom, add that class' name with a label (or add them on the bulletin board we share with Boxtops, and/or give them a poster/picture to keep afterward and maybe put by the classroom doors--great ideas from these forums). If possible we'll have a prize of extra recess and a snack of V8 Fusion and Goldfish. I'm thinking allowing each class to win only once, to help the trophy to move around more, but to have all classes be eligible for another year-end prize based on class totals, to keep the interest up. Parents really do seem to be motivated by such contests for their child's class to win and enjoy a prize; parents, students, and teachers all get excited over the fall and spring Boxtops contests.

!!--Think I might add spoons to the trophy's bowl top for winning classes. I even still have some gold plastic ones from a Despereaux birthday party... Thanks to everyone who posted their creative spoon ideas!

I totally agree with Lena about Campbell's needing to offer small, affordable incentive items. Recently I sent Anne an email saying just that:

"Also, your online store should offer small, affordable, student-oriented logo-branded items in groups of 6-10, which could be purchased as prizes for classroom point drive competitions, birthday treat bags, and the like. Schools/teachers and PTA's/PTO's often use small incentives, and they could tie in with your new art/academics/athletics aspects of Labels for Education. In general for motivation, parents don't want items for themselves, they want items that their kids will get excited about and be motivated to earn. And most kids respond more enthusiastically to more frequent, small incentives for easily attainable steps. Your current Campbell's pens at $1.20 each just aren't feasible and are adult-oriented rather than a kid thing--too expensive plus students are usually required to use pencils. More on target would be logo pencils, Goldfish erasers, temporary tattoos, backpack danglers, silicone bracelets, and squishy Goldfish or squeeze balls -- sold at prices that would allow schools, PTO's, and parents to buy quantities for giving them out to entire classes or even the whole school if a certain goal is reached. It creates a much bigger buzz when a larger group of students earns an item, or every student has the possibility of earning an item, rather than very few students winning one or two items. Plus better to have more items around--at home, on backpacks, in desks--to remind everyone to buy Campbell's and save the UPC's."

Hope Campbell's listens. Perfect timing with the new LFE apple design coming up (hope they update the clip art before school starts too).

If you follow the trail back through this post there's also my original post which contains a MS Word document of the "label" used to make the trophy.

I don't know if the "Dollar Tree" is a national chain or not...but just a couple of days ago I found a pack of 60 (yes, sixty) decorated pencils for $1. PenTech, too, not a cheap off brand.

Yes, re: incentives I agree it would be nice if Campbell's would provide something - they actually did send me 8 coupons for free "Soup at Hand" which I'm going to use as prizes for parents...but I make it a quest to find the best bargains yet the most fun incentives...I keep my eye on the ads for "free with rebate" items (back to school office supply stores will have...) or look for clearances after holidays, etc. And of course there's always the incentives that don't cost anything, like your privileges...

I've also found that simply making certificates for the classrooms works well...in a whole-class contest I might have a prize for first place but I'll print certificates for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd...and will walk down the hall and see those displayed outside of the classroom doors for the rest of the year...

We did just get our "Back to School" booklets within the past few days...I'm going to put a label on each book reminding people to return the Bonus Certificate that's on the back and asking them to write their name on the certificates. That will then be the entry form for a drawing...

RE: getting parents involved...I spoke at three orientation meetings this week about Campbell's, BoxTops, Target, etc...all of the programs that help us to get "free stuff" - and for my introduction I listed all of the things (both cash and materials) that we've obtained from these programs over the past few years. I had several parents come up to me after the program and say that they had no idea that these programs could be so powerful and helpful to our schools...and I'm hoping that this will translate to another increase in our participation!!

    Amanda,
I don't take it that way at all. I've just learned over time that sometimes it's easier not to fight but go ahead and come up with my own. I tend to be a maverick sometimes. And at this point if we wait for them to get on board, we'll lose another year.
My motto is that sometimes it's easier to apologize than ask permission. I've learned it over many years with a few different groups.]:)
If the PTO gives me the go ahead to try them, I'll post how they come out.

    Hi Cindy,

I'm sure making the magnets would work (I've made others this way, just not for Campbell's), however, the point is that Campbell's does not offer anything and maybe should consider doing so. Anybody up there in Admin listening? LOL

Anyway, I know of quite a few no-sale fundraisers that offer some kind of incentives or promotional materials, even if it is only in the form of posters to hang in the hallways. After all, to them it is no more than advertising and marketing doodads.

BoxTops just sent our school 30 Webkins free of charge for our next promotion. We aren't asking for that much for Campbell's, but would appreciate something that we didn't have to put our own money into all the time, ya know?

Anyway, I'm not bashing you and I hope you don't take it that way. You are an awesome and active member of this community and I like a lot of your ideas and input. I DO like your idea for the magnets. I just wish that we didn't have to spend our own pocket money on stuff like this :(

I like the idea of magnets. Has anyone tried to make some using one of the images that can be downloaded? I wonder if they could be put onto the magnetic sheets that can be bought at the craft store, cut apart and then distributed.
Anyone have any idea if it would work?

I emailed ANNE last school year about promotional items and was replied that they only offer what is in the catalog. The new thing in this catalog was the Box of small toys available for monthly give aways.

I was a little disapponted that they don't understand how hard it is to get the parents involved. If we get small items for the kids then at least it excites the kids and they ask the parents to participate. I even asked about posters that could be hung at local stores or businesses and they don't have any of them either, only the collection posters.

Out of our 300 kids in our school we probably only have 40 who actually bring in points. Which I am greatful and we have done wonderful regarding involving teachers and cafeteria staff. But again, little items can do a lot to further our cause and it benefits Campbells for advertising.

Our mascot is the Tiger. I found some good size tiger stuffed animals on sale. Sorry this one does cost a bit in the begining but the pay off is good. Our school is PK-5th. So seven of them I named them of course Chunky, Cinnamon, Campbell's, Pace Goldfish, Souper, and Spaghettos. The classes compete each six weeks against the other classes in their grade. The class that brings in the most gets the Tiger for the next six weeks. I also found magnetic signs that I hung on the outside of the winning class door so everyone knew there was a special Tiger visiting that class. I also made a large poster that hung in the library that showed where the Tigers where and how many points they were bringing in.
Another idea Free P.E. days we use our points to buy P.E. equipment so if I had a grade that wasn't doing so well.. I would challenge them to bring in so many points to earn a Free day.
