I do some contests that are individual prizes (ie, raffle-style) and some that are whole class, "who scores the most points?" My contests are not always monthly, but are just worked into our school calendar. I'm on the lookout for prizes year-round. Things I've used for whole class prizes... --McDonald's coupons (just walked in and asked...they donated 100!)... --Steeler team photos (another freebie...got enough for an entire class, from sportswear store)... --school supplies (office stores have "FREE" with rebate or "5 cent" items at back to school time...I stock up and ask family to get for me, too) --fancy pencils (look for them on clearance after holidays or use coupons at craft stores) --popsicles (inexpensive for a class) For the individual, raffle-style contests, you need 1 or 2 larger prizes. I'm excited about 2 WEBKINZ that I'll be using for my Back-To-School contest - my local pharmacy had a special "spend $10 and get a free WebKinz" last month! Last year I stuffed 8 pencil bags with the free/cheap school supplies, then put $5 in one "lucky" bag for Back-To-School. As an extra incentive, this past year I invented the "Golden Soup Can Trophy" - took a family-size can of soup, emptied it, and made a special label for it (file attached to this link - feel free to modify and use!). I printed on glossy photo paper; goes on can just like a regular soup can label. Wooden square base from the craft store...painted both the base and the top of can with gold paint, then securely glued the can in place onto the wooden base. The winning class gets to display the "Golden Soup Can Trophy" in their classroom until the next contest. I also print out a certificate for the 1st and 2nd place classrooms, and write up the information for the office so that it can be shared school-wide as part of the morning announcements. I like to post charts in the hallways showing class point totals (charts easily made and updated on MS Word) at least a couple of times during a whole-class contest. I find that this really motivates the students. During individual contests, I still award the trophy - I keep track of which classroom submitted the most entries and award the trophy for "Best Participation." Takes a little extra work but it really pays off!

Sheila, The Mega Novelty pack is new. I ordered 2 boxes, but will they will take 8 to 10 weeks for delivery. When I called LFE the representative just read to me the description from the catalog. I'll be glad to let you know, when the package arrives. I knew in my heart, that I would find a place for these toys to bring a smile. I'm really trying to get ready for the fall collection.

Has anyone looked at the prize box listed under the Teachers Resources? We collect Labels for Education, Box Tops and the Tyson Chicken labels. I'm thinking about offering the monthly winning elementary class, a prize from the prize box and either cookies or popcorn. The classroom can only win once, which will give other kids an opportunity to win. And to keep everyone contributing after they win monthly, maybe keep a running total and offer a pizza party before we release for Christmas. I've always given out individual prizes, so going to a winning classroom will be new to me. Please add your comments to this forum. It gives all of us an idea on how we can improve. Thanks!

Due to healthy food initatives, we are not able to off food as a prize. The only exception is when we collect for "Pennies For Patients". Our teachers have given us an option list. It includes things such as pencils and extra recesses. One class that won several things at once asked if we would allow them to go shopping for the food bank as their prize to help fill backpacks of food for families of children. They then walked down the street to the center to present their bags to the directer themselves.

Our incentives are for both Box Tops / Labels together. Our school is K-8. Each month the following incentives are awarded: Highest collection K-5; 6-8 received and "award" (paper that is displayed outside the classroom), a treat (usually cookies or fruit roll-ups or the like), and an extra spirit day (where they get to wear jeans & spirit shirts - normally only once a month). In addition the teacher received a 45 gift card to Panera Bread - after all if they didn't collect them in the classroom and turn them in the class would receive the reward. I will probably change this to K-2; 3-5; 6-8. In addition "hugs & kisses" (of the Hershey variety) are given to a classroom in K-2; 3-5; 6-8 for participation. I will usually randomly choose a classroom who turned in something that month (but wasn't the highest). Each child i in that class receives a "hug" & a "kiss" for participating. After all every little bit help.

We did a spring class contest for one month. The classes collected labels for the month, and the way our school is set-up we had 2 winners. We gave them a pizza party. We are planning on doing the same thing this upcoming year. you can visit our campbells site at berryhillcampbells.blogspot.com you can see the certificates that the classes received and pictures from one of the parties. megan

This was the first year our school had successful collections for both Box Tops and Soup Labels. I think it was because we offered incentives every month to the class within the grade level that brought in the most points worth. What kind of incentives does your school use to get them to bring things in? Here is what we did: -1 class in lower grades and 1 class in upper grades won the privilege to cut in the lunch line for 1 week. -Balls for the classroom -We have a strict food policy so we did Juice Bar party -Board Games for the classroom -If the class got 2 points per person in the class everyone in the class would get a pencil and everyone in the school could win. -Principals recess where the principal took out 1 class from each grade level for a 30 min recess and the teachers got a break.
