Gosh David, grocery savings stamps are a real flashback! I remember them when I was a kid, but haven't seen them anywhere around here for a long time. Although, now that I think of it, there's a hardware store chain that has their own "money" that gives a percentage saving on future purches. Of course that's only when paying by cash or debit card. I imagine at least part of the plan is that people toss the faux bucks, and the store never actually has to cash them in.

With higher prices everywhere, I'm shopping sales to stock up on things I'll use anyway, clipping coupons when I can, and trying to be selective with the treats and extravagances.

Of course there are lots of great ideas here!

A Local grocery chain awards 'Greenbax' stamps.... it actually used to be a glue based stamp that had to be licked and pasted into a book.... that was us kids job.... now its all electronic.... growing up a full book was valued at about $5.... today $1.00.

GREED got to them too..... they started allowing you to use the stamps to lower your grocery bill (as opposed to buying 'stuff'). They thought we were stupid.... An item regularly $2.00, on loss leader sale for $0.50.... or you can get it free for $2.00 worth of greenbax stamps..... Me, I'd rather spend $0.50.

What ever happened to a 'square' deal?

I shop at a Discount Grocery Outlet about once a week and try to fill in with coupon or on-sale goods when I need something I can't find there. I bought frozen fruit for smoothies at the Grocery Outlet for $1.99 a 1/lb bag. When I shopped at the regular store I noticed it was $7.99!! Holy moly! They also have pretty good deals on frozen fish fillets (both salmon and tilapia) and things like chips and cheese. I try to buy my spices there too, because they have big jars for only $1/ea. as opposed to a small jar for $2.59 or more. They even have nice wines for discount prices on occasion.

I try to comb the circulars that come out weekly and clip the coupons for things I'll actually use, but I have found that sometimes the brands that have coupons are more expensive after the discount than an off-brand might be even with no coupon. Sometimes our paper will have a $5/off $50.00 purchase for Safeway so I try to shop enough there to take advantage of that.

All in all, grocery shopping can be very depressing because of the high cost of the things we like so I just try to get it over with in the most cost-effective jand quickest way possible. LOL

David, you can bet that when and if the prices go down it will still be $17. Same as the guy that cuts my grass and the guy that delivers firewood. Both have put their prices up because of gas. I know that when gas goes down I'll still be paying the same price. Everyone's cashing in and it's the little people getting the brunt of it.

I wish... I can't even eat at the local Shoneys anymore.... they are up to $17.00 for a dinner buffet.....

That $17.00 for a meal I could prepare for $3.50....
Can't tell me its the rising prices..... greed sounds more like it.

David... Campbells soups were on sale this week so I did do a stock up... There is a recipe on here..and I know I printed it out..I have to search for it.. it was cheddar cheese soup and creme of chicken... in a crock pot.. I bought all the ingredients to make it tomorrow. Throw some chicken in with some cream of.. chicken/celeray/mushroom and add some rice and you always have a meal.

What I have to learn to do is buy less groceries. With my son away at college.. I can cut back on the quantity..and I always seem to "forget" that. However, I've had some tasty lunches with the left overs.

I remember when I was first married and I would go out to eat lunch with "the girls" and it was 5 bucks for lunch.. sandwich, chips and a drink at the local Deli or even the diner always had a lunch special for $3.99 or so... Now..it's easily 10 bucks for the same think so...the leftovers are great!!

I haven't usually used dollar stores for foods, just cleaning supplies and such.

I know it taste better with Campbells, but at about 1/2 the price..... I stock up on all my cream of's... basic corn, green beans, etc too... usually $30 a month and I'm set. IE: keep a small pantry of often used canned goods to save $$$$.

Great suggestion.

I go to Wal-Mart and buy a 10lb bag of Leg Quarters in the red bag for about for about $5.50 a bag for me and my wife I get about 6 meals (2 whole leg quaters) . You can also cut the quaters in 2 pieces and get about 24 or more legs and thigh for fried chicken this is cheap. ALso I go to a Sam's club and buy Country Ribs (i look for the ones that are marked down) depending how many people you are feeding one rib is usualy enough for two people. I like to take a rib season it up with onion powder and garlic powder put it in a aluminum pounch with a little butter and put it in the oven at 350 for about 2 hours and it will just fall apart then we put sauce on it because I like red and she likes yellow sauce.

We have an ALDIs here and they do have some decent prices. My problem is, they don't have everything I need, so I end up at a grocery store anyway. THEN I spend even more because I have no self control at the store! LOL Hubby asked me to finally give up ALDI's because it was costing me MORE going to two different stores! LOL

(My kids LOVED "renting" the cart! They thought that was cool! LOL)

These are all great ideas. Do any of you have an ''ALDI'' grocery in your area......they are a good place to go especially for your canned items.
The one here has a great produce and meat section as well.
Most items from cereals on are substantially less than even Wal-Mart and such.
They usually carry their own brands, but they do also have others.

Have any of you tried out the dollar stores that sell food?
My dollar store sells so many items that cost a fortune in supermarkets e.g. sundried tomatoes, but only a buck their.
When making a recipe that calls for so many different ingredients that you will only once or twice, check out your dollar store.

Momof3, cutting back on meat, prepared, and junk foods seems to make a huge difference on the grocery bill. Of course buying seasonally and locally as much as possible makes for better and tastier meals too. We don't seem to get the coupons here that I hear about in the US, but shopping for food when it's on sale (when it's something you want anyway), may mess with a longer-term menu plan, but can sure save money! • Janet
