GREAT pictures! Thanks so much for bumping this thread. I wasn't around last year so this is my first opportunity to see them! Years ago there was a Gingerbread House Kit we bought in the store and it had mini Snickers, Milky Way, Three Musketeers, and Starburst. That was our favorite! We've always bought the kits -- I've never made one from scratch. But I think that's definitely the best way to go so you can add your own custom ingredients! -- MM MM Good!

If you do it from "scratch", I guess you can add just about anything, right? I'm thinking some of those hearts that have love sayings on them would be really cute on a gingerbread house, plus heart sprinkles and stuff like that!

I think a Valentine's Day gingerbread house would be great. Lots of possibilities there with the heart-shaped candies, etc. Would be lots of fun for a February birthday, I think! I like making my own cookies just so I can say I did it, I think. I've only done it a couple of times but have learned something each time. It's fun! (mostly) LOL I would like some year to let the kids go to town on theirs and have one to do all by myself. I have lots of ideas on how to make it cute, and they just like to slap candy all over it.

We did one for Christmas but had so much fun I think I'll do another for Valentine's. I don't make the cookies from scratch but maybe I could -- can't be THAT difficult, right?

I love gingerbread houses, but mine never seem to hold together very well. I think a Valentines theme house is a great idea! My son's birthday is Valentines day, I bet he'd love to help make a gingerbread house. -- Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons..for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.

Lisa, thanks for all the great ideas. I can't wait to do ours. Not sure that we're going to get the chance before New Years as I had planned. We've lost a very important key and we're turning the house upside down looking for it. The teenager liked the keyring we had this key on and decided to take the key off. It's now missing and I'm a little freaked out about it. Anyway, as soon as things calm down I'm going to do that house. Maybe we'll do a valentines themed house. LOL ~Shan

Hi Shan, sorry I didn't get back in time to see your question earlier. I think nearly anything goes when kids are building the house. I used Skittles, M&Ms, some weird licorice things that I thought were going to be flat but were round and hollow, licorice ropes, red hots, marshmallows.... You can use chocolate chips, candy kisses, pastel mints, Christmas ribbon candy, gum drops, candy corn, gummy bears and/or worms. I think the sky is the limit. I love gingerbread houses. If I can get my method down I might try to make a different type of house for all kinds of seasons. My tween thought it might be cool to make and sell designer gingerbread houses someday.
