MMMMMMMM.... crockpots! Scott, your success confirms my suspicion that you ARE, in fact, brilliant. For those of you who disagree, please see Scott's suggestions about the pizza box in the "School Treats" thread. I had no idea you could blend up the apples, onions, etc. to make gravy that could be kept. Do you need to add anything to thicken, or can you just puree away? And here's a question from a lazy gal (me) who doesn't like to take extra steps: can you just freeze the sauce, whole apples/onions, etc. and all? I made beef stew tonight in my crockpot. The kids informed me it wasn't as good as Grandma's, but after they realized they could either eat Mommy's beef stew or else the napkins it was served with, they were pretty happy with it.

Jennifer, I leave the apples and onions in the sauce and blend them all togeater. It makes a rich thickened sauce.

It fits a whole chicken and a bunch of potatoes. With all the money I have spent on liners, I should have bought a new pot years ago. The chicken rosemary using a roasting hen (I didn't cut it up) took 6 hrs on high to get done. It was a big bird and I add potatoes and carrots 4 hr. into it. But we had it tonight, half of the 6 # chicken is gone. I skimmed the broth and used a stick blender to make a gravy (OMG). I have bought (as well as made) the frozen Italian Meatballs and heated them in this sauce, very good......they are also good poured over (cooked\boiled) wide-wavey egg noodles. My #1 advice to new crockpot users is to make sure that if you're strong enough to resist that temptation you should make sure the crockpot is plugged in and turned on as well. Gibb..... I hope you enjoy this as much as we do........the hubby and the kid's all loved it. The kids are grown and make it for their own kiddo's now. I still make it for just the 2 of us....just make a lot less. And when you have some of the sauce frozen, it's is easy to just fix a little when you want it (I freeze it in small freezer zip-lock bags and just pull out as many as needed). Everytime I'd take it to a party, it was licked clean. It's so easy and nearly no cleanup.....whatever you fix it in, you can serve it from!!! Hey Cin, Umm... Holy Awesome Recipe!!! This meets all of my favorite metrics - (meaning there is little to no physical labor required on my end). I'm so excited for the smokies recipe - my notorious father-in-law, whom-I-love-but-won't-eat-anything-that-touches-anything-else-on-a-plate is coming to visit soon and he'll LOVE this (anything with lil' smokies is OK by him, but last year he got a little tetchy when I gave him an unopened package and a paper towel and pointed him in the direction of the microwave). I LOVE my crockpot. I like to cook, but like cleaning up only one dish more. And I like throwing something frozen into a pot and getting a meal out later even better. I cook anything I can in my crockpot, and am always looking for new recipes. I have worn out my favorites with my family, so any and all new ideas are very welcome. FYI - you know how you're not supposed to be good and not keep picking up the lid to see how it's cooking b/c you let all the heat out? Cin's BBQ lit'l Smokies 1 (12 oz) jar Welch's Concord Grape Jelly 12 (oz jar) Kraft Thick`n Spicy Original BBQ Sauce 2 oz Italian Garden Pasta Sauce (or puree salsa) 1 T French's Worcestershire Sauce 1 T Beaver Deli Horseradish (w/grated horseradish root) 2 (14 oz) pkg. Hillshire Farms Beef lit`l Smokies Combine first 5-ingredients, heating until jelly has dissolved. Add beef lit`l smokies, continue heating on medium heat until totally heated and lit`l smokies are hot. __OR__ Place all ingredients in a crockpot on high until jelly has melted and smokies are hot. Then turn down to low and serve from pot. NOTE: When all smokies have been eaten, what do you do with all the sauce that's left over?? You can freeze the sauce, (after it's cooled off) until you want to fix this dish again.......thaw out and you'll already have a head start. Simply freeze sauce in a freezer zip-lock bag or a dish with a lid that closes tightly. Use within a few months. __OR__ Instead of freezing, I have also used this left over sauce and combined it with browned ground beef/sirloin, chunky chopped onion, sweet bell peppers, and diced tomatoes with a pinch of a few Italian spice/herbs. This makes a nice sweet pasta sauce to pour over Angel Hair Pasta, (or pasta of choice). That sounds delish Idbayou! We love sauerkraut! How was the kraut after the 6 hours? Had it turned to mush? Thats the only time my hubby won't touch it is when it gets mushy! I LOVE Sauerkraut with polish sausage or Kielbasa so I bet this would be a winner with me! -- ~*~Angela~*~

Hi Janet. Thanks for the reply. I tried something totally off the wall yesterday which I invented as I went. I had been hankering for some sauerkraut, so dumped a can into the pot with some sliced bell pepper, onion, and carrots. Then I dropped in a small lean portion of pork loin. Seasoned it with garlic, pepper, rosemary, and a package of Lipton"s Herb and Garlic soup mix. Then added about a cup and a half of water and cooked slow for 6 hours. Was good. For those who do not care for sauerkraut, just omit. I will continue to experiment with my traditional recipes but like your suggestion of reviewing recipes on this site comparable to some of my old standbys. Thanks again. -- ldbayou

ldbayou I wish I could offer suggestions, but I haven't explored the wonderful world of slow cookers as some here have. Have you compared your tried-and-true recipes to versions designed for the Crock Pot? Just thinking that the differences in ingredients and method/timing might give some clues as to what might need to be adapted? Maybe a search here in the forums for slow cooker or crock pot? I know there have been recipes posted here that are positively inspiring! Good luck with your quest. • Janet

I have been using my crock pot more recently in order to prevent my a/c from running as much. I have tried to make several of my tried and true recipes which are normally done on the stove top. With each recipe I have adapted, it doesn't taste right. In fact, I tried my chop suey recipe, and you could not tell what you were eating. It wasn't bad, but it sure wasn''t good. I have several recipes made for a crock pot, but haven't tried them. But they will probably be ok. It is my old standbys that I want to adapt and am having trouble with the flavor. Just not the same. Any suggestions or advise? Has Anyone else had the same problem? ldbayou -- ldbayou
