Nah, not outlawed, but not as debated as in the North/South. Thanks for the welcome!

DIDN'T IT SAY.....ONE IS MADE FROM WHITE-HOMINY AND ONE FROM YELLOW-CORN MEAL??????? Hominy grits is grits made from nixtamalized corn, or hominy. It is sometimes called sofkee or sofkey from the Creek word Polenta is a dish made from boiled cornmeal. The word "polenta" is borrowed into English from Italian. Grits is similar to other thick maize-based porridges from around the world such as polenta. Bogiemom I can't comment on the grits vs. polenta discussion, but I'm happy to welcome a fellow Ontarian to this friendly community! • Janet

Wow, thanks so much! I will definitely try them out. I was also watching Throwdown with Bobby Flay, and he did a dish called Shrimp and Grits. Can't wait to try this too!

Bogiemom, They can be the same thing depending on where you live. Today most of us think of grits as ground hominy (maze soaked in a lye solution to remove the outer hull). Polenta is ground maze (corn meal) I hope this helps.

What's the difference between....

What's the difference between grits and polenta? Growing up in a rural area of Ontario, Canada, we didn't have either of these. What are these and does anyone have tried and true recipes for these? I was watching Chopped, and the one chef commented on how instant grits were in his opinion, inferior ingredients. Looking forward to trying new recipes!
