I know! How about her cooking? lol

I was thinking about Melissa D'Arabian's ten dollar dinners and someone online was saying how she looked like she might be pregnant. Someone else said she could have a cooking show for homemade baby food and I thought, "How cool would that be?" That hasn't been done yet, has it? I'd watch it. There are a lot of moms these days making their own baby food and I think a lot more would like to try.

On another note -- has anyone been watching the Chopped champions showdown?

Sandra was up for a Daytime Emmy for her hair and makeup. How odd.

I remember there was a huge kerfuffle over Sandra Lee's "kwanzaa cake" and her "Star of David" cake for Hanukkah contained marshmallows and she didn't specify to get kosher ones since the regular ones apparently have pork gelatin in them. Eek. I saw photos on her site of the cakes and they're both basically angel food cake (store bought) and have frosting on top, something stuffed into the middle and some decorations. I am not a big fan of her adding vanilla to store bought frosting, it seems pointless. Maybe her meals are better than her desserts.

I also read a lil online about Melissa and someone said she just uses words like "flavor" and "perfect" etc. instead of really describing the food. I did notice that she does that a lot. It's a bit off-putting.

Did anyone catch WHat Would Brian Boitano Make? He seems really goofy funny and pleasant if you like a little humor in the kitchen.

Jen, it's not her recipes I'm talking about but her shortcuts. She was at culinary school and they were giving her all the ingredients to make biscuits. She thought this is everything Bisquick has and that's how her show Semi-home made started. It's just like we use Campbell's cream soups and how the famous chicken in cream of chicken soup got started.
I think it's great to be able to make recipes from scratch but sometimes I just can't. That's why I use her ideas in the week when I'm working.

Penny, I did make a cake with mandarin oranges in it from Sandra Lee once and it was pretty good. Do you have any Sandra Lee recipes you use and like alot that you can suggest for me to try? I might have just missed some of her good recipes.:)

Jen, I agree with you on Rachael Ray but not Sandra lee. She has so many great shortcuts for people working full-time and trying to get a meal on the table at the end of the day.

I have watch the show and I agree that it doesn't have the stuff to make it. It is interesting that she does things from around the world, but I'm from the mid-west and I'm not into the food she cooks. Give me an alton brown clone.

I made a point of watching this show today but I won't anymore. I thought it was just OK nothing special. I got a little tired hearing her talk about Paris all the time. Before her show Sandra Lee was on with a money saving recipe show and I enjoyed that so much more. Melissa seems a nice person but she lacks personality as with these shows there's as much talking as cooking.

I saw the last episode where she was making north African food and the sauce looked good but I don't have a lot of those ingredients on hand. I don't stock things like cumin etc.

One thing I have to say that bothered me a lot was Melissa uses her hands to measure things and put them in the pot. She's constantly wiping her hands off over the pot and it's driving me nuts, LOL! I keep thinking how sticky and icky her hands must be after touching sugar and salt and spices and then cracking eggs etc.

She also took some ginger from her ziploc bag and when she put it back after shredding some off, she didn't finish closing the bag. It's those little things that make me irritated. I know, I'm too picky, lol. Overall it's an ok show but I can't see myself watching it every week. I also don't know how they calculate the ten dollars -- do they assume you already have a fully stocked pantry and only calculate the few teaspoons etc. of items you use?

I think the 10 Dollar Dinners thing is a bad idea because it kind of limits what she can make. I think an already established Food Network Star (Giada, Paula, Guy ,etc.) could pull off a ten dollar show more easily. I think Melissa should be able to show what she can do first, without the limitations of a budget.
