I think you could use any flavor you like, just be sure it doesn't have ''pudding in the mix''.

    I like you're '' Butter Pecan'' idea.

you can use either a white or yellow cake mix..either one you prefer.

I kind of like the yellow myself, but most of my friends like the white best.

You can even use a Lemon cake mix with a lemom glaze drizzled on the buns, don't forget to zest your lemon to use in the glaze.....yummo.

It's also good if you put some orange zest in your yellow cake mix...then also putting a little in the orange glaze to drizzle over the top.

Here's one we all like....it's from a good friend of mine.

    Bonnie's Easy Big-Batch Cinnamon Rolls

1 reg. size cake mix without pudding in the mix (cheap brand ok)
    2 pkgs. rapid rise yeast
6 1/4 to 6 1/2 cups all purpose flour, divided
    1 tsp. salt
    2 1/2 cups warm water [120 to 130] degrees
    3 eggs, beaten
    1/3 cup vegetable oil
    4 sticks margarine, softened
2 cups sugar mixed with 1/2 cup cinnamon
    2 cups sifted powdered sugar
    1/4 cup milk
    1 tsp. vanilla extract
Combine cake mix, yeast, 1 cup of flour, and salt in a large bowl. Stir in water, eggs, and oil. Beat 2 minutes on medium speed of electric mixer. Gradually add enough
remaining flour to make a soft dough.
Turn dough out on a well floured surface. Knead until smooth and elastic. {About 5
minutes}. Cover dough and let rest 10 minutes.
Divide dough in half and roll each half into a 15 x 14 rectangle and spread each half
with 2 sticks of margarine and half of the cinnamon and sugar mixture or to taste.
Roll up each rectangle jellyroll fashion, starting at long side, moisten edges with water and pinch to seal. Cut each roll into 1 inch slices. Place slices cut side down on two
    greased 13x9x2 inch pans.
Cover and let rise in a warm place, free from drafts, about 45 min. Rolls will not double in bulk. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 min.
Combine powdered sugar , milk and vanilla, stirring well. Drizzle over warm rolls.
Yield about 30 large rolls. Enjoy

1hotbiscuit, what a good idea for a cinnamon bun shortcut! Shan, I like the look of the ones you found, and another that's in my file of temptations is one of Alton Brown's recipes from his episode called House of the Rising bun.

    It's at:
    http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_33873,00.html

There were some other good ones in the same episode - an Overnight Citrus Ginger Ring, and an Overnight Monkey Bread.

Shan, That looks good. Whenever I want to make cinnamon buns quickly I use this recipe from TOH Meals in Minutes:
1/2 c butter OR marg, softened; 1/2 c packed brown sugar; 1/2 tsp cinnamon; 3/4 c pecan halves; 1 pkg (12 count) brown and serve rolls

In mixing bowl, beat butter, brown sugar and cinnamon until well blended. Spread in the bottom of a 9 ix. round baking pan. top with pecans. Place rolls upside down over the becans. Bake at 450 for 8-10 minutes or until golden. Immediately turn onto a serving platter. Serve warm.

I am craving Cinnamon Rolls. SO I started looking for quick and easy recipes.

    http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/512/Cinnabon_Cinnamon_Rolls_Clone34907.shtml

    Ingredients:
    ***DOUGH***
    1/4 cup warm water
1 cup milk -- room temperature
    1 large egg -- beaten
    1/4 cup butter -- softened
    1 tablespoon sugar
    1/2 teaspoon salt
4 cups all purpose white flour
1/2 package instant vanilla pudding mix
    1 tablespoon bread machine yeast
    ***FILLING***
1 cup brown sugar -- packed
    1 tablespoon cinnamon
    1/4 cup butter -- softened
    ***CREAM CHEESE CINNAMON FROSTING***
4 ounces cream cheese -- softened
    1/4 cup butter -- softened
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla
    1/2 tablespoon milk
    1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Turn this recipe into a puzzle! [click]

    Directions:

Dough Add the dough ingredients, in the order listed, to the bread machine and prepare using the dough setting. On a lightly floured surface, roll out to an 18" by 30" rectangle. The dough can also be handmade. If you use regular yeast, you may want to let the rolls proof for 15-30 minutes after assembly.

Filling: In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon. Spread the softened butter over the dough and evenly sprinkle on the sugar and cinnamon mixture. Starting at the long edge of the dough, roll up tightly. Mark the roll every 2 inches. With a thread cut the roll by placing the thread under the roll at your mark, crisscross over and pull to cut. Place rolls into greased 8" or 9" baking pans 2" apart. Cover and let rise in a warm, draft free place until almost double, approximately 1 hour. After rising, rolls should be touching each other and the sides of the pan. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Cream Cheese Cinnamon Frosting: In a small bowl, mix cream cheese, butter, vanilla and milk. Add powdered sugar and cinnamon and mix until smooth. Spread on warm rolls and serve immediately.

This recipe has been adjusted so that the dough can be prepared in your bread machine
