My mother has always sprinkled mild paprika on her potato salad, just like her mother did. One day she was assembling the salad in a relative's kitchen for a family picnic, and liberally topped the casserole dish as usual. Well, except that the unmarked jar wasn't paprika, it was cayenne. It made quite the impression and I suspect some of her in-laws always guessed it was deliberate! Janet

I told my daughter, who was then about 10 years old, that I sometimes used the microwave as a cooking timer. I guess I failed to mention that the microwave actually had it's own timer. My daughter thought that all she had to do was just turn the microwave on and let it run for the duration that it took for her cookies to bake. Needless to say, the glass in the bottom of the microwave literally SHATTERED from the heat! (But the cookies were perfect!)

When I first started cooking, my husband (then boyfriend) insisted I was awful. He used to try and cook as often as possible and I believe he told his family how bad I was, because the next Christmas, I got a few cook books. There was a recipe in one of them for this sweet chicken and carrots with brown sugar and other ingredients too. I had never fried anything in brown sugar so I had no idea what setting to put the burner on. Thinking I was okay, I left the stove to go sit on the couch for a few minutes. When I came back, the sugar had burned to the bottom of the pan with the food on top of it. It wasn't too bad though. Most of it was salvageable but my pan had to be thrown out. I couldn't get the burn off without scratching the teflon off also. I'm happy to say, this is one of my few kitchen disasters. I'm sure I have many more to come. (Been cooking 2 years now.)

Years ago, the first time I made sweet & sour cocktail meatballs, I noticed the sauce wasn't thickening very quickly, so I added some more cornstarch, then put the meatballs & sauce in a casserole dish in the oven to keep warm. I then joined our guests for a glass of wine, and rather lost track of the time. When I took the dish out of the over (45 minutes later!) the sauce had congealed into a solid, gelatinous mass with the meatballs suspended in it. I would have been far more embarrassed if one fellow hadn't cut himself a square, ate it, asked for seconds (!) and remarked "Wow, this is great! I've never seen meatball jello before!" He even requested the "recipe" before leaving! I guess there's no accounting for taste.

I don't have any personally. My mom raised me right! She's had me cooking with her since I was 2! I think the main reason she did that was because....When my mother & father started dating, my mom wanted to impress him with a home-cooked dinner. It was the first time she had used instant potatos. To shorten the story, they ended up pouring the potatos over the gravy. The gravy was so thick, it had to be cut!!!!!!

The most hilarious cooking blunder that I ever made was the first Thanksgiving turkey that I made. My husband and I had only been married for a few months and we invited his brother to have Thanksgiving dinner with us. I roasted the turkey to a golden perfection, made all the traditional side dishes with laborious care, and served on the nice dishes. The moment came to carve the turkey, and when I carved into it discovered that I had left the giblets inside - in the paper bag.

Star, my family is a wordy bunch, and haven't always been above adding to the story to make it better.

Isn't that interesting, I wonder why it turned red? I imagine the corn must have fallen off the cob. I've read things about people having their garlic turn blue while cooking, but haven't had that experience either.

Here's a story my grandma used to tell about when she first got married. There were a lot of things she could cook, but she'd never fixed corn on the cob. Her mother told her to boil the corn till it was tender. She thought she thought that meant the COB should be tender, so she cooked it until she could stick a fork into the cob. She said the corn actually turned red.

Hi Jessica--When my husband and I were dating, I invited him to dinner. I was so sure he'd say "you worked all day--let's go out". Not this time-he said fine. All I had was pasta, some meatless sauce, an onion, a pepper and polish sausage. It was the worst tasting sauce. He was nice--said it wasn't that bad. I didn't eat it. Thank goodness for peanut butter!! Stephanie
