Just taking the time to cook a meal is more than most people in my age group can be bothered to do anymore.

A recent survey showed that less than 49% of Americans include a home "assembled" (not even necessarily cooked, like a salad or sandwich) item with dinner. Most rely on frozen entrees or fast food take-out. A tragedy, in my opinion.

Sitting down to a home-cooked meal was always important in my family. Dinnertime was when we'd chat & catch up with one another. It's a shame more families don't take the extra 30 minutes to turn off the TV and work together in the kitchen, then sit down and enjoy what they've created.

My family makes every meal special by starting by giving thanks -for our family and that we can sit down to dinner together and praying for those less fortunate. We also use the "good" dishes every day -we set a colorful table and light candles. Very often we garnish our plates as if we're eating at a nice restaurant -you'd be surprised how elegant spaghetti looks when garnished with grated parmesan -not the canned powder- and a little sprinkle of oregano over the top.

Dinner time is the greatest time for our family. We are a family of 7 with extended family in the same town. It is always a production and everyone has a task. The kids are a big help! They are always proud of whatever task they are given, which usually consists of one task to prepare and one for clean up. When family comes over, which is several times a week, it may seem like pure pandemonium, but it is really pure joy. Everyone brings something to contribute, and you know what, sometimes it's not so good, which is always fun too! And then, there are the nights that we order pizza and veg in front of the TV. It is the time of day that we all really look forward to.

Our Family makes it a point to ask around the table what each person did that day. Special class at school, gymnastics practice, and books read are my 7 year olds standard type of questions to answer. We even get our 2 year old into the conversation by daddy asking one word answer questions about who he saw and what we did during the day. this is a great way to stay in touch with our kids lives.

Hi, I'm Kathleen, since there's just my daughter and me until my Honey comes home from overseas, my daughter and I eat together. We like sitting and talking while we eat. She'll help me in the kitchen at times. I'm always working and she's doing her own thing, so this is the one time we do eat together. We have so much fun but will be glad when our other half comes home.
