Julia, this sounds like such a nice tradition to do with my children. I would love to do this with my boys, as I never had this chance with my mom. But, I need your help. Could you share your cookie and icing/frosting recipe with me? I sure do hope you get this recipe as I know it has been a while since you originally posted it. Thanks, Christina

Julia, I have this vision of your daughter mixing her colors, I bet it is so very cute to watch her-almost like a little scientist! No doubt she spends a lot of time adding the color sugars and other decorations too, right? I wish I could be peeking over your shoulders while you're making holiday treats!

Of course you needed all those colors! I understand completely! Stars should be yellow, a moon can be blue, Angels can be multi-colored! What other way is there to decorate Christmas cookies?

Gwen, the colored frostings reminded me of what we used to do to my mom and I then passed on to my daughter. We always made lots of different frosting colors. Not just red, green and white. I decided we needed blue, purple, orange and yellow too! They had to be the oddest looking Christmas cookies ever made/decorated, but I was so proud of them. My daughter now loves to use as many colors as she can make too. hehehehe

Frosting the cut out cookies was one of our favorite things to help mom with when we were kids, Julia. I loved sprinkling the colored sugars and other bits onto the cookies and actually convinced my mom to try food coloring in the frosting. Up til then, she always did white frosting. This custom was shared with my boy as he grew up. I did have to keep an eye on him to make sure he didn't lick his fingers and then pick up another cookie, though! Thanks for bringing back those memories.

When I was a child, my mother always had me help her make the Christmas cookies. I looked forward to that time with her. She didn't care that I would spill flour or when decorating cookies, I ended up wearing more frosting than what landed on the cookies. She just made it such a special tome for us to do something together. I have continued this tradition with my own daughter. Watching her covered with frosting and the biggest, proudest smile over what she has made just warms my heart and brings back sweet memories of my own mom. I was wondering if other have similar memories? What other ways did you mom involve you in holiday baking and what traditions do you continue with your own kids?
