My kids love to help, too, and they get a big sense of pride when they help cook, even if it is just pouring macaroni in the pot! And they I find that my daughter eats better when she's eating something she made!

One of things that I did when my son was young was to teach him how to prepare simple dishes and have him "in charge" of getting them to the table. It might be as simple as adding butter to drained veggies or mashing potatoes.
When he was in charge of these things, he really took pride in helping and then sitting down to eat with us. Of course we always complimented him on his good work!
