This is a great idea. I have a turkey roasting oven that has a tray and separate pots for keeping various ingredients warm. I have yet to use that part of it because we don't entertain large groups of people, but I think it's along the same lines as using a crock pot. Thanks for the tip! -- Lisa

Okay now.....maybe I'm a very unorganized person, OR I don't have a large enough kitchen/serving space. But, there's 21 expected guests for Thanksgiving Dinner @ our house this year! I can't see where on earth I'd have room for all those crock pots to keep food warm. I could get away with not having one for the dressing. But, the other dishes? We have people seated in 2-3 rooms as is.....breakfast area for generation #3 & 4. The dining room for generation # 1 & 2. My husband & I usually sit in the family room with the little ones. <---Its more fun in there!

Janet, This is a great idea. I can't wait to try it out this Christmas. Penny, I'll have to look at WalMart for the crockpots you're talking about. -- Carol B.

Janet, a friend of mine has those very small crockpots ( 1 qt, I think ) that you can buy at Walmart very cheaply, maybe 3-4 dollars. She does the same with her potatoes and at Thanksgiving she also uses them for stuffing, veggies and anything else that can be made ahead of time. She says it's the only way she can do Thanksgiving for 25 people. -- ....A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand...

Although we didn't use this method for Thanksgiving, one of the Readers' Tips in the Nov '08 Fine Cooking magazine seems ideal for any of those big holiday gatherings. The reader said: "When mashed potatoes are on the menu, I like to make them first and put them in my slow-cooker. I put the cooker on the sideboard, set it on low, and finish preparing the meal. When I'm ready to serve, I spoon just enough potatoes into a serving bowl for one pass around the table. Seconds and thirds remain in the slow-cooker, steaming hot and at the ready."
